Manchester-Triage-System

"The initial assessment ensures that a high treatment urgency is reliably identified and that the affected patients are promptly referred to medical treatment."

Initial assessment

In the Manchester Triage System (MTS), the order of treatment is based on medical urgency. Upon your arrival, you will be assessed by specially trained, qualified nursing staff who will ask about your complaints and symptoms. Afterwards, the urgency of your treatment will be determined according to international guidelines. Depending on the urgency level — from 1 (immediate) to 5 (non-urgent) — you will either be taken directly to the treatment area or asked to wait in the waiting area.

The initial assessment describes the tool used to estimate the urgency of treatment, with which a qualified treatment order is established in the emergency department. It is a validated and proven nursing system that completely omits diagnoses. The treatment urgency is determined based on the current symptoms presented by the patient (symptom-oriented system).

The LKH-University Hospital Graz is the Austrian reference hospital for the MTS and is the first and so far only training center for the initial assessment according to the Manchester Triage System in Austria.
