Cytology Institute
At the Cytology Institute, cells from various parts of the body - collected through smears or punctures - are examined. The primary goal is to detect diseases early and enable accurate diagnosis.
The institute evaluates:
- Two-thirds of all gynecological smears from Styria
- One-third from Carinthia
- Additional samples from Burgenland
This makes it Austria’s largest public institution in this field.
Core Focus: Gynecological Cytology
The main task is the analysis of Pap smears from the cervix. These are not primarily used to diagnose cervical cancer, but to detect its precursors—known as dysplasias. Each year, more than 200,000 samples are sent to the institute by over 140 gynecologists in private practice.
Extragenital Cytology
In addition, over 11,000 cytological samples from other organs are examined annually for tumors and other conditions. These include specimens from the:
- Lung
- Breast
- Thyroid
- Lymph nodes
- Ovary
- Pancreas
The institute also assesses body cavity effusions (e.g., urine) with the same diagnostic focus.
Patient Transport Services
Ambulances arriving at the University Hospital Graz are automatically recognized by their registered license plates, allowing the barrier to open automatically upon entry. Certain taxis and rental vehicles that are registered for commercial passenger transport are also recognized by the system and may drop patients off directly on hospital grounds.
If a vehicle's license plate is not registered, a form is available at the information desk in the parking garage. To verify authorization for commercial passenger transport, a copy of the vehicle registration certificate and the usage classification (e.g., 25 = taxi, 29 = rental vehicle) must be provided at the info desk.
