Outpatient Care

Emergency Outpatient Unit

To ensure optimal care for our patients, two senior physicians are on duty at all times to immediately treat injuries or conditions involving bones and soft tissues, the abdominal and chest areas, and the urogenital system. Our hospital serves as a supraregional trauma center with the highest level of care, treating approximately 55,000 patients annually - including around 170 severely injured children and adolescents, who arrive by emergency services and receive acute interdisciplinary care in the shock room.

Specialized Outpatient Clinics

The clinic is organized into teams of outstanding specialists who are recognized and well connected both nationally and internationally.
Our goal is to provide every family with gentle pediatric surgery, safe treatment pathways, and a child-friendly environment.
Our team of experts cares for your children in the following specialized outpatient clinics:

Congenital conditions in the chest or abdominal area are rare and complex malformations that require highly individualized treatment. To meet this challenge, we have specialized in interdisciplinary care and have been officially designated as a Center of Expertise for Congenital Intestinal Malformations by the Federal Ministry.

Our specialized outpatient clinics support families from birth through adolescence and into adulthood. The specialists in our pediatric center work closely with experts from a wide range of medical disciplines: pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric radiology, pediatric orthopedics, sports medicine, pediatric psychology, pediatric physiotherapy and occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietetics, continence and stoma counseling, and pediatric nursing. We are also in regular contact with relevant international reference networks (ERNICA, ARM-Net) and patient advocacy organizations (KEKS, SoMa).

At the Center of Expertise, two dedicated teams care for patients:

Center 1: Pediatric AeroDigestive Team (PAeD)

This team cares for patients with conditions such as:

  • Tracheal malformations (e.g., tracheal stenosis, tracheomalacia)
  • Esophageal atresia
  • Diaphragmatic hernia
  • Congenital lung malformations (e.g., pulmonary sequestration, CPAM)
  • Chest and abdominal wall defects (e.g., omphalocele, gastroschisis, pectus carinatum and excavatum)

Center 2: Gastrointestinal Team (GUT)

This team cares for patients with conditions such as:

  • Duodenal atresia
  • Small and large bowel atresia (e.g., jejunal, ileal, colonic)
  • Colorectal malformations (e.g., anal atresia, Hirschsprung’s disease)
  • Congenital malformations of the urogenital tract (e.g., bladder exstrophy)
  • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction due to underlying conditions

In February 2024, we were designated by the Federal Ministry as the first and currently only Type B Center for Vascular Anomalies in Childhood in Austria. In our vascular outpatient clinic, we care for patients with congenital and progressive vascular malformations. These often lead to pain, swelling, or emotional distress for children and adolescents.

Treatment of such anomalies ranges from careful observation to complex medication therapies and plastic-reconstructive surgical procedures. With a wide variety of therapeutic options, we can treat conditions such as hemangiomas or soft tissue tumors, and correct malformations like pectus excavatum (sunken chest) or protruding ears.

The experts in our specialized outpatient clinic know which individualized treatment is most appropriate in each case. Providing personalized care for children, adolescents, and their families is our highest priority.

This clinic offers specialized diagnostics and therapies for a wide range of urological conditions that can affect patients from newborns to adolescents (and young adults).
We place strong emphasis on intensive interdisciplinary collaboration, working closely with:

  • The University Clinic for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (Nephrology, Endocrinology)
  • The Clinical Department of Pediatric Radiology
  • The Section for Pediatric Orthopedics (especially for MMC patients)

A major advantage is that all of our partner departments are located within the Children’s Center, making it possible to provide comprehensive diagnostics and follow-up care on an outpatient basis.

Additionally, through collaboration with the University Clinic for Neurosurgery and our own Functional Diagnostics unit, we are able to offer interdisciplinary long-term care for patients with severe malformations, even after corrective surgery.

A special priority for us is the long-term support of patients with myelomeningocele (MMC) and their families, helping them navigate the wide range of challenges they may face.

The Sports Medicine Outpatient Clinic at the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery offers comprehensive sports medicine care for elite athletes, young athletes in training, and patients whose conditions may benefit from physical activity. Services range from fitness and musculoskeletal function assessments to performance diagnostics on a bicycle or treadmill, as well as field-testing and individualized training plans.

Core Services of the Sports Medicine Team:

  • Sports medical care for elite and youth athletes
  • Preoperative risk assessments (e.g., for patients with pectus excavatum)
  • Assessment of exercise capacity in children with cardiac conditions
(in cooperation with the Clinical Division of Cardiology, University Clinic for Internal Medicine)
  • Stress testing for patients with lung diseases (e.g., asthma, cystic fibrosis) to guide training plans
(in collaboration with the Clinical Division of Pulmonology and Allergology)
  • Sports medicine support for metabolic disorders
(e.g., obesity, anorexia athletica, myasthenia gravis, Osler’s disease, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency)

In our gait lab, a multimodal approach is used. In cooperation with physiotherapy, we apply the latest technologies to evaluate patients’ movement patterns, enhancing both preoperative and postoperative care. Through precise motion analysis, we can identify and address functional deficits at an early stage, offering targeted treatment and optimal support for our patients.

Research is also a major focus. Together with the Sports Medicine Outpatient Clinic, we conduct multiple projects aimed at advancing diagnostics and treatment strategies for children and adolescents.

Our Inpatient Wards

On our wards, a dedicated team of nurses and physicians ensures professional, personalized, and holistic care for children and adolescents.
We offer a day clinic, a 5-day ward, three inpatient wards, and a pediatric surgical intensive care unit.
In the ICU, a highly experienced team of doctors and nurses cares for premature and newborn infants, as well as older children and adolescents.

To help with orientation, our wards are color-coded:

  • Blue and Yellow for the general class
  • Red for the special class
  • Green for the day clinic and 5-day ward

If your child is admitted to the day clinic, you will arrive at the scheduled time and, if your child is symptom-free, you may return home later the same afternoon. Children admitted to the 5-day ward are expected to stay for a short hospital stay (at least one night, excluding weekends).

All About the Child

Children are wonderfully different from adults: their bodies grow from newborns to adolescents, their needs change with each stage of life, and their understanding deepens with every new experience. All of these differences - and many more - influence how children respond to illness, examinations, or surgery.
That’s why it is so important to us that our young patients feel safe and comfortable throughout their recovery. The Children’s Center offers a variety of supportive services and resources, available to children, their friends, and family members.

A truly special offering - unique to our clinic - is our special art therapy program.
Our art therapist, Heidemarie Landgraf, supports children and adolescents on their healing journey through creative expression.
For many, painting and creating offer an easier way to express inner experiences than using words.

Our patients have the opportunity once a week to engage in textile or technical crafts and explore their creativity in a supportive and therapeutic environment.
