Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Education

Gynecology and Obstetrics is a medical field that addresses a wide range of women’s health issues—from childhood and adolescence through to the end of life. Over the past years, the field has undergone significant transformation and advancement.

Originally structured around three core subdisciplines

  • Obstetrics
  • General gynecology
  • Gynecological endocrinology

additional clinical focus areas have emerged. These include, among others: Genital and breast oncology (both surgical and non-surgical approaches), Prenatal diagnostics and perinatal medicine, Urogynecology and laparoscopic surgery for benign conditions and cancer, Reproductive medicine, with overlaps in neonatology, pediatrics, human genetics, pathology, as well as experimental and clinical pharmacology.

The goal of medical education in gynecology and obstetrics is therefore not only to impart specialized, organ-specific knowledge, but also to highlight the importance of this discipline as a central interface for both clinical and scientific questions that arise in women's health care.
