Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine

About Our Department

The staff of the University Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine care for patients from all areas of the LKH-University Hospital Graz, and also provide emergency medical services in the Graz region. Our work spans from preclinical emergencies to the entire operative/interventional field and intensive care units across various departments—always with the well-being of our patients in mind.

Our goal in all of these areas is to provide the highest level of care while taking individual needs into account. At the same time, it is especially important to us in our field not to forget the human aspect and to practice medicine on equal footing with our patients.

As a university institution, we are also deeply involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, training young colleagues to become specialists.

Another pillar of our academic mission is research at an international level, through which we aim to continuously develop and advance our medical practice in line with our core principles.

If you have any further questions about our clinic, please contact us through our administrative office.

Our divisions

Currently, more than 43,300 anaesthetics are administered each year at two clinical departments for surgical procedures and diagnostic examinations.

From preoperative assessments to postoperative monitoring, our patients receive continuous care and support. This comprehensive care is a key element in ensuring the highest possible level of safety throughout their stay. In addition to anaesthesia and intensive care, the University Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine also offers pain therapy and emergency medicine services.

Pain Medicine and Emergency Medicine

A pain management service is available around the clock to provide acute care for postoperative pain. For patients suffering from acute or chronic pain with significant distress, the pain outpatient clinic offers a variety of individually tailored therapeutic approaches.

In the field of emergency medicine, the focus is on staffing the emergency medical helicopter and emergency response vehicle as part of an interdisciplinary emergency medical system.
