For Our Patients
Intensive Care Units
The intensive care section of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine (UKIM) consists of the General Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (CCU), and the Respiratory Care Unit (RCU). Currently, more than 2,000 critically ill patients with internal medicine conditions are treated annually in these three units.
Internal intensive care medicine integrates interdisciplinary and interprofessional treatment of critically ill patients who primarily require non-surgical (conservative) treatment and have underlying conditions from the entire spectrum of internal medicine.
Our services range from in-hospital emergency management during cardiac arrest to high-tech device-based treatment of multi-organ failure.
For our Patients and Relatives
Treatment in an intensive care unit is very stressful for patients. It is extremely important to us to keep both patients and their families closely informed about the course of illness. In such situations, personal communication is essential and should never be neglected.
For planned visits, please first ring the bell at the entrance to the respective ICU and wait until a staff member responds via the intercom. If there is no response after a while, please do not hesitate to ring again.
You may be asked to wait a little longer before visiting your loved ones. This is usually due to ongoing nursing or medical procedures that are not compatible with visitors being present.
Protecting the privacy of other patients is also a top priority.

Since each doctor is responsible for a large number of patients, we kindly ask that one designated family member be chosen to receive updates on the condition of your loved one. This person will be asked for a previously agreed-upon password that was set with the patient and will thus be identified.
Visiting hours for both intensive care units are daily from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Day Clinic
The Day Clinic has been in operation since November 2012 and is divided into two areas:
- Outpatient area with 9 therapy chairs
- Inpatient (stationary) area with 5 beds
In the outpatient therapy area, patients are referred from all internal medicine specialty outpatient clinics of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine (UKIM) and the Emergency and Admissions Unit (EBA) for infusion therapies. These include primarily chemotherapy, antibody therapies, biologics, and angiological treatments. Endocrinological testing may also be performed.
In the inpatient area, day clinic admissions are carried out for planned diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. These mainly include:
- Cardiac catheterizations
- Electrical cardioversions
- Peripheral vascular angiographies, with or without intervention
